VALLEY PIONEER DEAD

Mrs. Mary L. Andre was Born in Bay City in 1838.

Mary Louise Andre, one of the oldest residents of the Saginaw Valley, died at her home , 1941 Center street, Saginaw, at 3 o’clock yesterday morning, from the results of complications of disease. Mrs. Andre was born July 6, 1838, in Bay City, and when a small child went to Saginaw with her parents, where she has resided since. When 17 years of age she was married to the late Alexander Andre. She was a well known resident and a prominent member of St. Andrew’s parish, in this city, her husband being active in the establishment of the church many years ago. The father of the deceased, the late Benjamin Cushway, went to Saginaw during the early part of the last century and was in the government employ for 82 years, and with his family lived inside the old Indian fort that was established some where near the vicinity of the present Taylor house block, on Court street. It is said that Mrs. Cushway was the first white woman to go to Saginaw.

Mrs. Andre was the mother of 10 children, six of whom are living – Mrs. Marie Louise Florentine, Alexander, Charles P., and Frederick Andre, Mrs. Lillian Ward and Louis C. Andre, of Saginaw.

The furneral will take place Monday morning at 8:30 o’clock from the house, and at 9 o’clock from St. Andrew’s church, Rev. Fr. Vogi officiating. The internment will be in Oakwood.

Alexander Andre (deceased) was born in Detroit, Mich., April 27, 1834. He came to Saginaw in 1848 and resided with his brother, P. C. Andre, until he obtained his majority. He traded with the Indians, in partnership with P. C., for some time. On the first day of May 1855, he graduated from the Commercial College at Detoit, with high honors. He engaged in the mercantile business alone for some time, and then in the lumbering and real estate business. At this he was very successful, and grew wealthy. He was a member of the City Council for one year and was a highly respected citizen. Upright in all his dealings, and of a free-hearted, genial dispostion, none knew him but to love him. He was married in 1856 to Miss Mary L. Cushway, daughter of the late Benjamin Cushway, of whom we make further mention elsewhere in this work. Mr. and Mrs. Andre had 10 children, of whom 5 boys and 2 girls are living.
