Representative from the First District of Bay county, was born at Fort Edwards, Washington county, New York, January 4, 1836. When about five years of age his parents moved to New Albion, Cattaraugus county, New York, where he attended the village schools until he reached the age of fourteen years, when he left home rather unceremoniously, forgetting to bid adieu to his friends. He went to California the overland route, meeting with the usual adventures that attended travelers in those days. He remained in California for three years, then returned to New Albion to pay his respects to his early friends. He then went on a trip to Virginia, where for two years he engaged in building and repairing saw-mills. Returning again to New Albion he was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Kilby, of Hartford, Connecticut. He went to Minnesota, where he again engaged in the mill business and also devoted a portion of his time to reading law. On the breaking out of the war of rebellion he immediately enlisted in the Third Minnesota Regiment, in which he served until the following year, when he was discharged on account of ill health. Upon returning home he removed with his family to Iowa, where he devoted his time to studying law, and was admitted to the bar of the State in Fayette county, where he practiced his profession until the summer of 1864, when the war still continuing he again became a soldier, enlisting in the Eighth Iowa Cavalry, and with that organization serving until the close of the war, when he again returned to New York and soon thereafter came to Michigan and located in the Saginaw Valley. There he abandoned his profession on account of his health, and engaged in the lumber business. He is at present a member of the Board of Supervisors of Bay county, and a member of the Board of Education of Bay City. He has been something of a traveler, having visited, with his family, nearly every State in the Union. He has always been a Republican, and was elected to the present House of Representatives in a very strong Democratic district by a vote of 2,706 to 1,9165 for Horace A. Pacand, Democrat, and 103 for Bertram Moore, Prohibitionist.

James A. Green, of the firm of Green & Stevens, was born in Washington County, N. Y., January 4, 1836. Went with his parents to Chenango County, N. J. Was there ten years in the lumber trade. In 1859 he moved to Minnesota, where he remained until 1861. He then joined the engineer corps and was employed in the manufacture of lumber for the army, in which he continued until the close of the war. He then went to Cattaraugus County, N. Y., and was there three years in the lumber trade; then moved to Bay City and remained for three years. From Bay City he went to Kansas and remained one year. In 1871, in company with A. J. Stevens, son of the late Appleton Stevens, he purchased the Stone Island property under the firm name of Green & Stevens. Their mill has a capacity of 15,000,000 feet of lumber yearly. Mr. Green married May 31, 1857, to Miss Mary Kelly, of Connecticut, and has three children. His residence is on South Centre Street.

He has been quite a traveler, having visited with his family nearly every state in the union. Mr. Green has been a life long republican and was elected to the state legislature in a strong democratic district by a large majority, showing his great popularity with the public.
