We are an organized group formed to provide an educational forum for individuals interested in exchanging information on the history of the American Civil War, including Bay County's participation in the war.

Regular Monthly Meetings
Guests welcome to attended monthly meeting. - Meetings are held during the months of Jan., Feb., Mar., Apr., Oct. and Nov. Meetings include featured presentation and open discussion. Annual Membership: $20.00. Information: 989-892-1136.
Where: Community Room at Alice & Jack Wirt Library, 500 Center Ave., downtown Bay City. Time 7 p.m.

    • About Our Name?
    The Seventh Michigan Cavalry name was chosen in recognition of Captain James Birney (1844-1870) from Bay County who served in this unit and the Michigan Cavalry Brigade under the command of General George Custer (1839-1876), and after the war was assigned to the Buffalo Soldiers regiment stationed in Texas. His father and grand-father, both named James, played a prominent roles in the early history of Bay City. See Birney Family History.
    Seventh Michigan Cavalry History
    The regiment was raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan by the Hon. F.W. Kellog (1810-1879), and was assigned to the Michigan Cavalry Brigade commanded by General Custer. It was active from October, 1862 - June, 1866. Its total enrollment was 1779, of which, 49 killed were in action, 26 wounded and 247 died from disease.
