Bio.: Charles Babo (1822-1897)
-- Mr. Babo was born in Rastadt, Baden, Germany, where he married Stephanie Hozler. In 1853 they and their two children, left their native land and came to America. IN 1863, they moved from Lansing to Bay City, where Mr. Babo established himself in the gorcery and crockery business, with stores in Bay City and West Bay City.

History of Henry "Harry" Campbell.
-- Harry Campbell was a brother to Sydney S. Campbell, one of the first pioneers to settle in Bay City. Harry live in Saginaw for a time prior to joining his brother in Bay City, where Harry was a teacher, and a with Julius B. Hart, considered the towns most popular jokesters. Birth, death and marriage data could not be found. However, many of the city's early Campbells were related, and links are provided to their history pages.

-- Mr. Craft was born at Palmyra, N.Y., and four years later, came to Michigan with his parents, settling in Oakland Co. He began his work life in Bay City, at the saw mills of Drake Bros. and Sage & McGraw, later he established a business in retail liquor. He was married twice, Mary A. Sheeley and Carrie Gardiner.

-- Mr. Conover was born in Amboy, NJ., and is a descendant of Richard Stockton, signer to the Declaration of Independence. Graduate of Princeton and Columbia, rancher in Texas, where he married Cornelia Fitzhugh. In 1900 they moved to Bay City to handle the Fitzhugh family estate.

-- Mr. Buckley was born in 1866, at Horesheads, N.Y., and came to Michigan with his parents at a young age, setting in Bay City, where he was partner in a wholesale grocery business. His father, John, was in the theater management business with Samuel G. Clay. Frank was married to Ella Rosenbury.

-- Mr. Hill was born in Tompkins Co., NY. He was president of the Michigan Pipe Works and secretary of the Bay City Bridge Company. His close business associatess were Charles E. Jennison and Henry B. Smith. He married Suan P. Williams, widow of Samuel P. Hale.

-- Mr. McCush, born near Bay City, and raised in Oseco Lake, Michigan, moved to Whatcom, Wash., in 1891, where he was proprietor of the Globe Clothing Co. He married Eva A. Thomas, of Indiana, and they had two daughters.

-- Mr. Lane, native of Ontario, Canada, was in the teaching business, working initially as a principle of several schools, including the International Business College in saginaw. In 1896, he moved to Bay City, and was president of the Bay City Business College. He was married to Mary Olive, and they had two daughters.

-- The World's Star Knitting Co., was founded in 1895, by Archibald Galbraith. He began knitting hosiery out of his family's home on the west side of Bay City, and from the humble beginning, the busienss became one of the worlds largest manufacturers of underwear and hosiery.

Bio.: Henry S. Dow (1822?-1875)
-- Mr. Dow, was born in New Hampshire, After serving in the Civil War, he came to Michigan, attending the Univ. of Michigan. About 1871 he came to Bay City, wwhere he established the Lumberman's Gazette, a journal devoted entirely to lumbering interests. He also published the first history book on Bay City. No family information has been found.

The Globe Hotel had its beginning as the homestead of Sidney S. Campbell in 1838, then the first framed house in Lower Saginaw, now Bay City. After the settlement's population had grown in size, it became a boarding house, it was then enlarged and in 1862, it became the Globe Hotel.

-- Mr. Emery was born in Wisc., and came to Michigan in 1864, with his parents. He work for his father, also John G. Emery, who was parter in Emery & Garland Co., which manufatured machinery and other item sold to saw mills. In 1891 he moved to Muskegon, where he was one of the ogranizers of the Shaw Electric Crane Co. He was married to Genevieve Wilson, of Columbus, OH.

-- Mr. Harding was born at Chatham, Ont. Canada. His parents moved to Bay City when he was young. After receiving a business education, he work for a number of local firms, before accepting a job in Cleveland, and after this he moved to L.A. Calif., where he gained wealth in the realty business. He married Hannah Inch at Bay City.

-- George Kolb was born in 1827, and emigrated to America in 1852. In 1854 he settled in Bangor (now a part of Bay City), he worked in the saw mills a few years before opening a brewery business called Salzburg Brewery.

Bio.: Bishop Michael J. Gallagher (1866-1937)
-- Bishop Gallagher was born in Auburn, Mich., and raised and educated in the Catholic schools. Desiring to become a priest, he went attened seminary schools in Canada and Europe before being ordained in to the priesthood, and eventually becoming a Bishop. His death occured at Detroits.

Bio.: Rear Admiral Carl H. Cotter (1892-1965)
-- Admiral Cotter was raised in Essexville, MI. He was an engineering graduate from the Univ. of Mich. in 1916. In 1918 he began a career in the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1937, and lived out the rest of his life in Charlotte, NC. He was married to Katherine Murphy.

1860 Election Fraud, Raymond vs. Stevens.
-- In a tightly contested battle to win a seat in the State House as representative from Bay County, Appleton Sevens defeated Henry Raymond in a close race. Raymond claimed illegal Indian votes made the difference and filed a complaint with the State Legislature. This is the transcribed document of the legislative proceedings.

-- Mr. Bradley was born at Sparta, Morrows Co., OH. He is the son of Henry M. Bradley, and nephew of Nathan B. Bradley, first mayor of Bay City, both prominent in the lumbering. Charles was in lumbering as well, in the lumber trading business, which became one of largest in the country. Later, he and his father moved to Duluth, MN, where they continued their interest in lumber. Charles married Maggie G. Ten Eck, of Albany, NY.

-- Mr. Shannon was born at Warren County, N.J., and settled in Bay City in 1863, where he established a small carriage making shop, which later became on of the largest in the Saginaw Valley. He was married to Etta Bennett, of Brooklyn.

-- Capt. Persons was born at Smithville, N.Y. In 1849 he moved to Michigan, settling at Bay City, where he was in the fishing business until 1859, when he moved to Alpena and became a lighthouse keeper and Alpena County's first State representative. He was married to Susan Reed, of New York.

-- Mr. Root was born in Lewis Co., N.Y., and moved to Bay City area in Mich. in 1865. His first few years were spent sailing the Great Lakes, then he engage in the ice business a few year before entering the bottling and cigar making business. He married Charlotte Williston, of New York.

-- These brothers were both born at Montreal, Canada, and came to Bay City, MI, in around 1870 with their parents, Francis and Philomena (Beaudoin) La France. Both worked for their father who was a blacksmith, then setup a large livery stable and undertaker business.

-- Mr. Cotter was burn at Chicago in 1860. His moved Essexville, Mich., with his parents in 1868. Mr. Cotter was a boat builder, worked at J.R. Hall's mill, served as village clerk, and was well-known throughout Michigan as a sharpshooter, holding many awards. He was married to Maud Kidnerman.

-- Mr. Gilbert was born at Norfolk, Ontario. He established a dental practice at Bay City in partnership with Eugene Little. Mr. Gilbert was highly esteemed Mason, at the local and state level, holding position as Grand Master of the Michigan Lodge. He married Carrie Van Campen, who died three years later.

-- The Bay City Brewing Co. had its beginnings as a brewery of the Van Meter & Co. during the late 1870s, and later was owned by C.E. Young & Co., under which the business was expanded and became the Bay City Brewing Co.

August began work life as a chore boy, and one of his more interesting ones was as a newsboy for Bay City first newspaper published by William A. Bryce. August married Matilda B. Word, of Wisc.

Davidson was married to Jessie Cross, of Detroit.

-- Mr. Harry was born in Seneca Co., Ohio, and came to Bay City when 18 years old where he found worked in lumbering and shipboating, and later, he became an electrical engineer with the Swift Electric Co., of Bay City and East Saginaw. In 1896 he became superintendent of the Citizen's Light & Power Co., in Kokomo, IN, retaining a residence in West Bay City. He was married to Clara Afflect.

-- Mr. Rosenbury was born in Petersburg, N.Y. He served in the Civil War while a resident of Oswego, IL. In 1877 he moved to Bay City where he owned a large furniture business, the building of which still stands on the s.e. corner of Water and Third streets.

-- The first Polish immigrant to settle in Bay City around 1870. Shortly thereafter, he began a campaign to get other Poles to come here. The were about 200 Polish families when they erected St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Dec., 1874.

-- Historical article written by Judge Albert Miller and printed by The Lumberman's Gazette in 1872, describing the first saw mills built in the Saginaw Valley prior to the lumber boom period. Judge Miller founded the village of Portsmouth, which is now the south end of Bay City.

-- Dr. Nottingham was born 1842, in Muncie, Indiana. He joined the Union army at the outbreak of the Civil War. Afterwards he received a medical degree from the Bennett Medical College in Chicago. He moved to Bay City in 1879 where he practiced his profession. He was married twice, Mary Duling & Julia Scofield.

-- Dewitt was born in Canada and raised in Bay City. His fahter, Peter was lighthouse keeper for many years, and after his death his wife with the help of Dewitt continued to maintain the lighthouse. Dewitt was married to Ida E. Sharp, of Maine.

William was married twice, Nancy Malone and Emma Hall.

-Fitzland was born in 1838, at Akron, N.Y. After the Civil War, he settled in Michigan, initially in Ingham Co., the in West Bay City, where he started a hoop factory with Alexander Bush, based on a hoop machine designed and patented by Fitzland. The business was later sold to William Goldie. Fitzland was married to Eleanor S. Reed.

-- The Wilson Hoop Co., was founded by Fitzland Wilson in partnership with Alexander Bush in 1882, at West Bay City. Fitzland, a mechanical engineer, designed and patented a unque machine for cutting hoops several time faster than the standard at that time, making the business highly successful. The business was later purchased by William Goldie.

William E. Zabst (1863-?)
-- Mr. Zabst was born in Erie Co., Ohio, where he was raised on a farm. In 1879 he moved to West Bay city, MI, where he working in the Sage sawmill for several years, and was able to save enough money to attend college for a degress in music, then return to his last roots and established what became a very successful music school. His two brothers, Eugene and Frank, owned a blacksmiths shop in West Bay City. No marriage was found.

-- Mr. Zabst was born in Greenfield, Ohio, where he was raised on a farm. In 1882 he moved to Essexville, MI, working as a blacksmith in the J. R. Hall mill. Saving enough funds, he established a blacksmith business in West Bay City wth his brother Frank. William another brother, was a music teacher. Eugene married Emma Russell, also from Ohio.

George Dicey (1836-?)
-- Mr. Dicey was born in Bath, N.Y., and came to Michigan with his family at the age of 16 years, and some years later, settled in Bay City where he worked ten years as boiler foreman for the Industrial Works, afterward he enter a parntership with John Carey in their own boiler manufacturing shop. Mr. Dicey married Sarah Woodward, from Waterloo, Jackson Co., Mich.

Capt. John Y. McKinney (1836-?)
- Capt. McKinney was born in Detroit, and came to Bay City with his parents in 1850. He served in the Civil War, and afterwards engaged in the lumber business, then in farming in Portsmouth Twp. He married Harriet Hudson.

William H. Barse (1814-?)
-- Mr. Barse was born in Mayfield, Montgomery Co., N.Y. He came to Michigan in 1832, engaged in sailing, and in 1867, he moved to Bay City, where he ran the Anchor Line agency and a gorcery business. He was married twice, Maria L. Nichols, then Amelia W. Schultz.

-- J.W. Hogle was born in Orleans Co., Vermont, and came Michigan in 1864, settling in Portsmouth Twp., where he started the first dairy business in Bay city, and became owner of the Tuscola plank toll road. He married Mary L. Dixon.

-- J.S. Hogle was born in Ohio, and came Michigan in 1864, settling in Portsmouth Twp., with his parents, James W. Hogle and Mary L. Dixon, where he engaged in the grocery business. He married Lillie Gordon.

-- Capt. Forrest was born in Sandwich, Ontario, Canada, and was captain of many Great Lakes vessels, include those of P.C. Smith and Benjamin Boutell. He and his wife Sarah Jessup resided in West Bay City, Mich.

Charles C. Fitzhugh (1821-1895)
-- Charles was born in Livingston Co., N. Y., and was a son of Dr. Daniel H. Fitzhugh who was a partner in the Saginaw Bay Company that platted Bay City. Charles moved to around 1841 to help manage his father's properties. He married Jane M. Jones.
